The kōtare is respected by Maōri as the watchful sentry. In fact the word kōtare was sometimes used to to mean the elevated platform in a pā used as a lookout. This very skillful and lovely piece is carved out of recycled re gum and exquisitely inlaid with various coloured glass to depict this iconic bird.
It is made from recycled wood from a red glum tree that was falling onto a former clients' driveway.
